AM: 500 Festival 10k. 3.5 warm up on the final few miles of the course. Lined up on the starting line, and I saw a barefoot guy (he won in 34:03). And I thought I was tough in my flats and no socks in the 30 degree weather. I also saw a guy from the 5k in Vibrams, sporting a not insignificant paunch. He beat me again.

Went out around 5:50 for the first part of the first mile and felt very strong, but backed off a bit knowing things wouldn't be pretty if I continued at that pace. I stuck with my plan. I could actually see the lead folks and the escort (never knew this series had one). I stayed around 6-7th place for most of the race, passing the second place woman around mile 2.5-3 (hoping I wouldn't pay for it later). I got passed toward the end by some guy who I passed early in the race. Left glute wasn't firing on all cylinders again, which caused me to slow down some in miles 4 and 5. It feels like my leg is wandering and hitting the ground at an awkward angle. Anyway . . .

Splits: 6:05, 6:09, 6:06, 6:04, 6:07, 6:15 (not vicious, but a not insignificant headwind. Legs starting to feel heavyish as well), :52.5 for .15 (5:39 pace). Not much of a kick for the partial, but the course was short anyway if you trust the Satellite Gods. With some calculations, I found my equivalent would be 37:55.5, so still a legit high 37-minute 10k. I don't get many chances to run a certified 10k course, so I guess it doesn't matter anyway. These courses are "USATF Sanctioned," which as near as I can tell means they will have official police presence and have in writing that you aren't supposed to wear headphones. It has nothing to do with the course measurement as near as I can tell. Maybe Beach to Beacon in August if I get in. Running the same course with 27-29 minute 10kers would be freaky.

Got my stuff from the bag check and listened to some really excited old fella tell me about his coaching history. He was really amped up and carrying on. For quite some time. Went back outside and squirreled away some cookies from the receiving line in my warmup jacket for a post-cooldown snack.

Long cool down of 5 miles. Just felt nice once I got moving and good to see other people from the race and residents out running and not having insults hurled at me from cars.

PM: 35 minute shake out

Awesome time Jason. Congrats on the huge PR!

Great run Jason and well done on the PR. Keep a sharp eye on that glute. I'm now promoting you from jogger to half decent runner:-)

Wow that's a huge promotion from Bam!

Nice job Jason! You're definitely entering new territory. No surprise, with the consistent work you've been putting in, but its to see you getting some major payoffs.

And just in case your curious, sanctioning and certification are different things, as you suspected. Sanctioning just means that a race is following all USATF and international rules, and that makes the course eligible for records, etc. Its basically a contract b/w USATF and the race. It still needs to be certified as well, which is only about distance.

Man, you're getting predictable with your awesome consistent races! Great running, great pacing, etc etc.

If you had run barefoot it would have been sub-37 though.

Really nice race and PR Jason. Congrats!

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Mar 09, 2013 at 13:44:55 from 24.10.249.165

Yeah, every now and then you run into a fat guy who, for whatever reason, can sort of run. My money would be on you in a marathon though!

Nice time. That sub-3 hour marathon really looks likely for you.

Riley: Thanks. The Bamster keeps me focused, and as you can see he had a pretty good, if confident, read on my time.

Bam: Pleased with the time even though it wasn't quite the Bam confidence level time. This was 5k PR pace in August. As for my promotion, thank you, but in the modified words of Marty McFly "Nobody calls me . . . [a jogger]."

Jake: You were right about my last race; this race was pretty much the same pace. Thanks clarifying the distinctions. That's pretty much what I thought. They are trying to sell the series I would imagine with that USTAF label. But, hey, 3 races for $40 is good for my grad student budget.

Joe: I stay away from races with hills (this one has some short climbs, enough to think about adjusting the pace) so that helps, but I thought pacing was good. Hated to see that last split in the teens though. I will practice my barefoot running, but as I told my podiatrist I am worried about broken bottles, to which he replied "Do you live in a war zone?" We clearly inhabit different parts of town.

Bret: Thanks. Send the warm weather this way will you?

Rob: He was oddly overweight. I've been beaten by fat dudes with their weird old man speed, but this guy just doesn't look right. My next marathon concludes with 16 miles downhill, so I hope you are right.
