AM: 9th street out and back - 7 miles, averaged 8:04. Did some strides to try to loosen the hips. Finally got moving on the last one around 4:30 pace.

PM: Nothing. It's beautiful out too, but there's too much to be done. As much I wanted to get out this will slow me down a bit.

Now those are some strides.

Great workout on Saturday BTW. Impressive stuff. Lookin' forward to seeing what happens at the Sugarloaf! One heck of a PR on deck.

I used to run strides during most of my easy runs before I started racing, but have since slowed, usually only hitting low-5s, but Coach Murphy mentioned strides should be done an a much higher intensity. Given that my 5k pace is theoretically somewhere around 5:35-5:45 I should be running much harder than 5 flat for these short efforts. Plus its run to blast along the road at that pace in a non-running community :)

I hope for good things in three weeks. Northern Maine is definitely not known for it's scorchers at 7:00AM in May. Now I just need a tailwind!

For some reason i didn't encorporate strides in this training cycle at all. Spring marathons aren't ideal to train for (especially for speedwork). I'll have to remember that though for the next go around.

I agree with you on the flying around town thing. I even like tempos for that reason. Provides for some comments the following day. :)

I haven't had a chance to read up on your marathon yet. Northern Maine ahould be awesome for you!

It's not well known and it is small, but it is one of the fastest BQ courses and it's not too far from my folks. I think the course record is in the 2:2x range (and that's solo).

Indiana isn't too bad in the winter. I did do some tempos after snow storms. It's often dangerous running on the shoulder of busy roads, but I made it work. It was definitely colder and snowier than last year. I did some 8-mile tempos in 12 degrees with biting winds. Some days you got to get out and do it.

Strides are a good idea. They teach you form, turnover, and how to run fast without breaking your body. They also show you that you always have a little extra in you despite how you feel. I find they also help me loosen up. I'm not sure they are a good idea too soon after a hard race, bit after a hard workout and a recovery day, they work nicely.

That course looks like fun. Scenic point to point. You're gonna fly.

This winter was quite a mess to train in. Just shows us how much we want the payoff!
