Purdue Track - Sharpening Workout 8.25 miles total

3 mile warm up, few drills, then strides

2 x 800 (2:46.6, 2:54) slow 400 jog recovery

3 minutes

4 x 400 (75.4, 77.4, 77, 77) 60-65 seconds rest

3 mile cool down

The 800s were not great. Terrible as far as pacing goes. I wanted 2:45 or faster but I just never got going and I was sucking humid air. The 400s were better, but I could have pushed a little bit to get them all at 75 or at least 76. Originally I had 200 meter jogs but I decided to walk. I also had 2 x 200 very hard but decided it was enough for today.

Not feeling great about my running. Thinking too much about where I've been and where I think I should be. Part of the problem is trying to run in warmer, humid conditions. It's not terrible right now, but much harder than running in the 30s and 40s. It's early though. Still not into the 7 week cycle for Beach to Beacon.

Managed to get two classes to teach this fall in Philadelphia. The pay ain't great, but it looks like I will continue to have mornings for running and some days off to do workouts, grade, write, and run again in the afternoon. Not bad.

PM: Purdue Cross Country Course - 4.2 miles, averaged 10:11. Ran with my friend Jim. Kept it extremely easy because he's trying to get back into running. I should have been doing afternoon runs with him more. I really enoyed our run.

I hear you. I need a race I think to say "okay, here's where we are. Keep working and fitness will come." Of course the race I have is a 1 mile and if I run it right it won't leave a good taste in my mouth :-) After that maybe I can win a 10k with a tempo time and feel good about myself :-)

Onward and upward.

The schedule is great. More structure than I currently have, but plenty of time to run.

Try scheduling in your harder workouts after looking at the forecast for the week. Your June averages look about like our mid/late April -- meaning there are still quality running days if you're selective. Sometimes those 5-10 degrees really can be the difference, mentally and physiologically.

Monumental mile....sounds fun!

That's a good idea except if I get a warm race :-) But I think I'd rather run faster in workouts and adjust a little for races as necessary. I ran my 5k PR when I wasn't in great shape and when it was high humidity and in the in the mid-70s. Admittedly it's not very fast for what I've done but I still ran hard when it was less than more ideal weather conditions I usually run in.

There's a guy in the elite race going for a sub-4:00. If he does it, I owe everyone on the blog a beer, a soda, juice, water, or other beverage of choice. I hope he does, but my guess is that there aren't too many sub-4:00 road miles. I will predict that the winner runs 4:10.

Tough to run a sub-4 solo, on the roads (as if I would know!). Guessing it's a flat course, but generally road miles never end up being quite as quick... probably due to racing instead of following a rabbit and getting splits every 100m.

You can imagine though. You know what that pace feels for shorter distance (I still can't quite run that fast on most days as a sprint). It will be relatively warm I think. High of 77 and my mile is at 6:30PM and the elite mile is at 7:30. Something slower than 4:10 might take it. No idea what the rest of the field is like.

The course is in the same area as the half and full finishes (Monument Circle is the finish, which is mile ~2.5 of the half and full)

Looks like the humid warm air is getting everyone. That does seem like a very doable schedule for your training. Good luck with the classes.
