AM: Wissahickon Trail Classic - 13.5 miles total

This race is in Wissahickon Valley Park where I run pretty much every day. There's a 5+ mile stretch of dirt road called Forbidden Drive at the base of a steep ravine. The trails traverse back and forth through the hills and connect back to Forbidden Drive in various places. The trails are rocky and very steep in places.

4.25 miles warmup mostly on the trails. Did some strides. I knew I had to go out hard to not get behind a bunch of people, so I got out hard but settled down a bit before the steep hill. I spent the race getting passed going up the hills and blowing by people on the downhills. The last two miles were tough mentally because I just didn't think I had anything left (in trail running you generally have a lot more left assuming the distance is short. Muscle fatigue doesn't correspond to breathing in the same way as on the roads, and so on). Should have pushed harder to get under 45 minutes. Still learning trail effort.

I got passed by a guy in Vibrams with about 1.25 to go. Okay, finger feet, let's see if your stones are as big as the ones on this last downhill! I passed him again and worked the downhills pretty hard and tried to finish hard but it looks like I took too long to rev up after the last sharp turn.

800+ feet of gain

Cooled down 3 miles for another 300+ feet

What's the goal for the Philadelphia Marathon?

Philadelphia is a long, long way off, but I would say a PR, but really something under 2:45, low 2:40s. Maybe sub-2:40 :-) That's probably ambitious enough for right now. We will see what I can do to bring down my 5k/10 times and how fall training goes, lack of injuries, continued consistency.

I'd be even more ambitious but I don't want to get injured. I can't take that at the best of times and these aren't the best of times. They aren't the worst either I suppose.

With all those qualifications in mind, sub-2:43 or the Women's OT Standard :-)

A tale of too many cities often leaves one chasing one's tail when it comes to the best times and the worst times. For sure, don't get dizzy and end up injured.

I did. I had some downhills that he couldn't match. I did get chicked several times by the same lady who won the women's. I passed her initially in the meadows at the top of the first hill, bombed the downhill, then she would catch me on the uphills, rinse and repeat.

As it turns out she the Penn record holder in the steeple chase. I am not sure where she stands as runner overall, but she's in good shape.

Looks like I have her in the mile, half marathon, and marathon. She's got me in the 5k though. Looks like she ran 58:33 for 10 miles in early March, so she was a minute ahead of what I was a month ago.
