AM: Jefferson High School (long) - 10 miles, averaged 7:44. 27 degrees and sunny. Usually I groan for 20 minutes on the first freezing day, but I felt very good on this run and I was comfortable in my tuke, gloves, and baselayer. About 10 degrees colder than the then-coldest run a week or so ago.

Couldn't decide what to do for workouts this week. I was going to do a v02 max workout and a big HMP workout, but I don't think the v02 max will help at this point, so I will do a set of 200s and sprinkle in some strides to keep things stretched out. As for the HMP workout, I usually do the Hansons', which has served me well. I open to suggestions.

PM: North side - 6 miles, averaged 8:12. Did some strides.

I think at this point you do what makes you feel confident. Getting in one really solid HMP workout should be the priority. That's what I'm planning - LT workout tomorrow, then something shorter and faster over the weekend.

I like it. I was thinking maybe 3 x 2.5 miles in place of the usual 4 x 2, which would be close to to the same number of quality with just a few more minutes (~3:00) before taking recovery to build strength and confidence.

From Jake K on Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 12:08:28 from 67.177.11.154

Yeah I think anything in that ballpark (6-8 miles of total running at HMP) does the trick. And then over the weekend I'll probably do a sharpening type workout - short tempo then 16-12-8-4 cut down.

You know you're from the south when you've never heard of certain winter articles of clothing...tuke..?

3 x 2.5 sounds wonderfully brutal - that last rep will give you the pain tolerance to finish the race hard!

From Jason D on Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 17:44:32 from 24.1.80.94

I hadn't either. It's sort of like beanie meets dew rag (without the longer portion): http://tinyurl.com/m8k2a42

3 x 2.5 will be hard. I feel like I coasted through the Hansons' 7-9 days before Philly (of course I ended up running 10 seconds faster in Philly than the workout). My recoveries were 8:15-8:40 pace and they are NEVER that fast. I just hope I can get through it and hit my paces. Looks like it should be 35 degrees, so I have that going for me.

Ah, it's a hat! Sounds like interval recoveries might be something of an indicator for you. I can relate..

From Matt Schreiber on Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 21:31:06 from 66.17.102.185

Looks like you've got a good solid plan for the upcoming 2 weeks. I bet that hat thingy breathes a lot better than the cotton one I wear.

From Jason D on Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 21:51:13 from 24.1.80.94

After tomorrow, the plan is 1). not get hit by any cars or eaten by the St Bernard that has a chain that clearly extends to the sidewalk (just moved in. well its owners did) 2). Be sensible. Big boy doubles will taper off. 3). Try not to eat everything. (I'm telling my mom and my sister to hold my Halloween candy.)

My tuke (too-ka) is very aerodynamic and breathable. Please tell me you at least don't wear cotton socks? I get the willies anytime I see someone in regular cotton socks (Megan included). I rarely wear socks these days (even for a marathon).

Short story then I need to hit the hay: I see a fella downtown cheering on runners during the race Saturday. I know who it is, a barefoot runner (2:39 at Boston last year) because he is in the rain, clapping...BAREFOOT.

From Matt Schreiber on Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 21:58:12 from 66.17.102.185

Funny stuff! 2:39.. Barefoot.

I DO NOT wear cotton socks! :) i will be investing in a new hat shortly. Cotton is miserable.

I still haven't figured out the no socks thing yet. Some time (not so late) you'll have to explain that to me.

Looking good, Jason - great mileage! You're gonna tear it up Nov. 2!! See you there and a bunch of bloggers there :).

From Jason D on Thu, Oct 24, 2013 at 15:48:05 from 24.1.80.94

Thanks, Joe. Should be a good time. I'm usually running the marathon, so it will be nice to see the other 5 miles of Indy (of course I do a fair bit of racing there). Looks like number 3 for you this fall. Crazy!
