Narrowly avoided my second German Shepard attack in the last 2 1/2 months. It came across the road at me so I started yelling for help and looking for cover. Ran around a car and thought of jumping on it to get a height advantage (I should have broke every damn window in that car given that it was the owner's). I screamed for a while, and finally some neighbors informed me it was the people's dog in the yard I ran into. I grabbed a fence post but it was rotted. Still a decent poking tool. The owner must have got the dog around back of the house because I no longer saw it but didn't see the owner. I ran my mouth to anyone who would listen for a while. It's probably time to get some sort of defense device.

That pretty much ruined my concentration and I started to run too fast (~mile 2.3-2.5).

Holy cow! Who needs tempo runs when all your ticker needs is a dog scare. There are different self defense alternatives out there. I carried something for a while when I saw a pit bull just running around.

Ah JD, that's class. That's just made my Friday night:)

Since I moved to Philadelphia I've seen some insanely well behaved dogs. My tempo loop is out in the suburbs, and although a nice area, it has yards and people are a bit more lax. What I can never understand is why people with fenced in back yards leave unattended dogs out front.

But, yes, I got the ticker going. Resting heart rate was 39 this morning. Hoping it comes down from 239 earlier today :-)

It wasn't very classy. My mouth wasn't, and I am sure people didn't like me yelling but I think they understood I was pretty frightened.

Any chance you want to move here and pace me on a bike that comes equipped with a stun gun?

I'm that blind I'd probably shoot you - so yeah, why not.

I just googled "German Shepherd Puppies" and I'm guessing those aren't exactly the kind you came across.

You and the German shepherds are building quite a history! When I lived in the boondocks (OK) all dogs were loose - I started just pausing the garmin and do a little charge at them and yell "NO!" 99% of the time, a domestic dog will back off a bit and just bark. The other 1% of the time, you'll probably just get mauled. The odds are in your favor though.

The 1st German shepherd that go made at me about made me soil myself. I do think know how you keep surviving these near misses.
